Port Aransas History Port Aransas was believed to be the home of Karankawa tribe for many centuries. The "Dog Raisers" were thought to have domesticated foxes and coyotes. The Karankawas were nomadic, but likely held the island and quite a lot of territory inland until officially settled in 1850 by Robert Mercer. Mercer raised goats and cattle on St. Joseph's Island (Port Aransas) while mustang horses ("Mustang Island") roamed freely at the same time. |
